    Circa 4th-6th century A.D.

The villas, palaces and shops of the Roman Empire, were lit up by millions of terracotta oil lamps. They were filled with oil through a central filling hole and held a wick through the hole of the channel. The lamps of the rich were beautiful works of art, highly prized today and very expensive, the more common examples, like these however are also highly decorative in their own right.
