Circa 1220-1230
A superb illuminated folio from an early medieval bible, hand written by monks in France at the time of the crusades, in latin gothic textura script on both sides, using black ink on animal vellum. Rubricated initials and marginalia in red and blue. Each side with two columns of 50 lines: Wonderful penmanship to hand write 11 lines of miniscule caligraphic text per inch. The page is from Leviticus and covers laws concerning leprosy, unclean discharges from the body and the Day of atonement.
