Romano-British Horse and Rider Brooch
A.D 50-150
Popular horse and rider composition, rider with head thrown back in typical manner of similar examples, with ribbed hair, representative of the Celtic fashion whereby hair was worn 'limed' and combed into thick strands, thus recalling the Celtic tradition prior to Roman conquest. Horses mane similarly portrayed, with long flowing tail and incised cells with traces of original enamel remaining. Thought perhaps rider represents important personage, for within the riders body it can be seen that he holds what appears to be a baton of office.
Similar examples found at temple site on Cold Kitchen Hill in Wiltshire. Cf. Hattatt pl. 156-160
