Full Description
Massive Anglo-Saxon Provenanced Cruciform Long Brooch
c. A.D 550
A magnificent example of an early Anglo Saxon Cruciform brooch.
By sixth century Cruciform brooches had sprouted side panels, or lappets which increased the space available for decoration. In this instance the lappets are undecorated bar the punched ‘V’ marks bordering the central panel of the head plate. Head knob has also expanded by this time, and in this instance has pseudo-volutes. The foot has expanded laterally and represents a typical stylized horse’s head. Arched bow.
A very fine, rare example.
Found at Icklingham, Norfolk 1932.
