Magna Graecian Xenon Ware Kantharos
First half 4th Century B.C
Body near cylindrical above, rounded below, with a slight ledge between; short flaring rim, low foot with heavy moulding, two handles of flattened section from below rim to just below carination. Foot has flat outer face bearing two grooves, and rounded underside. Reddish clay with black gloss, with washed red decoration covering upper part of body between handles, obverse with two lines, running spirals, two lines, meander motif with two lines as ground line, flanked on both sides by two vertical lines, with tongues beneath rim; reverse showing two lines, row of S-hooks, single line, horizontal chevrons, two lines, S-hooks, with single line as ground line, flanked on either side by two vertical lines, with tongues beneath rim.
For similar kantharoi attributed to Xenon group cf. Hayes 1984 195, Beazley, EVP 218-19.
