Full Description
Very Large Gnathian Skyphos
Late 4th Century B.C, Middle Gnathia, attributed to Laurel Spray Group
Brown tan clay with black gloss over whole bar band above foot and dull reddish wash in certain areas with applied red and white. Tall and slender form, conical at base, curving up to a tubular rim with rolled over lip. Tall discoid base, hollow on underside, two rounded in section handles attached below rim. Decoration consists on one side of row of white tongues running between incised line perimeter, a second incised line along base forms perimeter to band of white dots, two white vertical bands follow, grape clusters and vines hang to midpoint, other side row of white tongues run between pair of incised lines, with hanging leaf-sprays (red stem flanked by white blobs) which hang to below midpoint.
