Superb Large Magna Graecian Red Figure Skyphos

Fifth Century B.C

Buff tan brown clay with black metallic gloss over whole, applied red, white and gold. Tall and slender form, conical at base, tubular near rim with rolled over lip, two comparatively small rounded handles attached just below lip, tall discoid base. One side showing draped female with fillet in her hair standing left of half-length column, floral spray on left, tambourine in outstretched left hand and ornate basket in the other, rosette in the field, egg and dot band beneath rim, groundline marked by single red line. Other side showing Winged Eros standing right of half length column holding phiale and what appears to be a musical instrument, various items in the field, same egg and dot motif, palmette complex flanking either side beneath handles.

A superb example of exceptional quality.
