Ancient Maceheads: Weapons & Ceremonial
With every civilisation requiring means to defend itself, our range of mace heads is impressive in its geographical and historical span. Production extends back to the third millennium BC, with the level of detail varying from simple haematite blocks to complex designs for maximising the pain inflicted. Complexity of decorative detail also varies, and examples can be seen both with and without inscriptions. The mace heads in our collection include metal and stone prototypes, which have occurred regularly since prehistoric times. Their usage was not confined to the battlefield, however, with many mace heads found as votive offerings in shrines.
