Anglo Saxon & Viking Antiquities

Inhabiting Great Britain from the 5th century, the Anglo-Saxons took over large parts of the island in the centuries following the withdrawal of the Roman Empire. They comprise people from Germanic tribes, who migrated to the island from continental Europe. In the 9th century, the Anglo-Saxons king Alfred the Great stopped the Vikings from taking over all of Great Britain. After sealing a peace deal, the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings became neighbours in Britain.

During this period the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings developed their own specific artistic production. Metalwork artefacts, bronze belt straps and brooches became ones of the preeminent Anglo Saxon and Viking art forms.
