Cyperus papyrus is a type of reed used by the Ancient Egyptians to make papyrus, the stem of the papyrus plant is cut into long strips that are then layered, hammered together and dried under pressure before being cut into scrolls or later into pages. Papyrus was used extensively by the ancient Egyptians, the earliest examples of which date from 2550 BC describing the building of the Giza pyramids.
