Proserpina

Proserpina was the ancient Roman equivalent of the Greek goddess Persephone. Her mother was Ceres, goddess of agriculture and grain. She is represented as a young woman, usually holding a wheat sheaf. Within origin mythology, Proserpina is largely responsible for the changing seasons, after her abduction by Hades to the underworld. As she spends six months as his wife within the underworld, Ceres mourns for her daughter and the Earth wilts into winter. As she joins her mother on Earth, Proserpina’s emergence initiates the arrival of Spring.
