Ancient Thessaly was a vast area, spreading from Mount Olympus to the Spercheios Valley, and geographically diverse, with varied ranges of plains and mountains. The Pagasetic gulf in Southern Thessaly was the only coast in which it was suitable to harbour. In mythology, Thessaly is the home land of the great heroes, Achilleus and Jason, and is also attested in Homer’s great works, the Iliad and Odyssey.
