The Tetrarchy, instituted by the Emperor Diocletian in 293 AD, divided the governance of the Roman Empire between the augusti and their juniors, the caesares, with the augusti akin to Jupiter and the caesar akin to Herakles, his son. Maximianus was first chosen by the Emperor Diocletian as his caesar in 285 AD, before being raised to co-augustus in 286 AD, and governed over the West. Galerius and Constantius were appointed caesares in March 293. This tetrarchic system ultimately lasted until 324 AD, though not without issue, when mutually destructive civil wars eventually led to Constantine I in control of the entire empire, ushering in the Constantinian dynasty. The Constantinian dynasty did retain some aspects of collegiate rule, with the concept of the division of empire enduring until the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
