A Gandharan Buddha carved from schist stone and represented with reflective, downcast eyes; a typical top-knot hairstyle; and draped clothing. He is depicted here in a modest fashion, alluding to his humbleness and to the reverent state of one who has achieved enlightenment.

 

Date: Circa 2nd century AD
Condition: Good condition, some restoration and signs of ageing on the surface. Mounted on a custom made stand.

The Gautama Buddha is the primary figure in Buddhism and on whose teachings the religion was founded. His life and teachings are recorded visually through Gandharan art, and so he is the primary subject for sculpture.
