Animals occupied a prominent place in ancient art across a number of civilisations and across a variety of media, including painting, pottery, and jewellery. Some animals were venerated, whilst others were sacrificed. Zebu were domesticated in the Ancient world as early as 2000 BC, and were used as draught and riding animals. Miniature zebu were even kept as pets.
