It was the custom for the Ancient Greeks, especially the wealthy, to have highly decorated everyday life objects. Bronzes of this type might have been modelled in the shape of zoomorphic creature, mythological heroes, gods and goddesses. The top-bow hairstyle and the posture of holding a lock of hair suggest the statuette might be a depiction of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation.
Greek Bronze Statuette of a Female
£ 495.00
A finely cast ancient Greek bronze statuette of a female standing on an oval base. The figure is depicted wearing a full-length chiton and himation with her hair braided and neatly drawn up in a bow at the top. Her right hand is raised towards her face, possibly holding a lock of hair, whilst her left is placed at the waist holding the hem of her garment. Careful attention has been paid to render the naturalistic facial features, delicate hairstyle, as well as the detailed pleats showing the textures of the fabrics. The high base is enriched with three encircling grooves.
Please take note of the measurements.
N.B. The statuette cannot stand unaided.
Provenance: From a private collection formed in the 1990s. Ex London, UK, gallery.
