The first buckles were made in bronze and produced ubiquitously, enjoying widespread use across cultures. During the Byzantine Era, skilled craftsmen produced aesthetically simple buckles which demonstrated not only the quality of the workmanship, but also the proliferation of religious iconography in everyday objects.
Byzantine Gold and Agate Buckle
A Byzantine gold belt buckle set with patterned agate to the front. The buckle has a slender and sleek tongue-shaped plaque finishing in a bulb finial. Three studs are attached to the plate.
