Medieval ring brooches were primarily used to fasten clothes; however, they also had a number of other uses. Those adorned with precious metals and featuring delicate designs were often used to demonstrate the wearers wealth and status. Although they are found in other periods, they are especially associated with the early Medieval period in Britain and Ireland. These types of brooches were worn by both men and women, being located on the shoulder for male wearers, and the breast for female.
