Roman Bronze Penannular Celtic Style Brooch

A fine Roman bronze penannular brooch featuring a rounded shape with large, circular terminals. A prominent ridge with two horizontal grooves is displayed at the top of the brooch. A free-moving, thick pin sits vertically across the diameter attached by a loop. The terminals are enriched with vibrant red enamel inlays in the shape of a circle with a central dot in a Celtic style.

Date: 2nd-3rd century AD
Condition: Fine condition, slight eroding to places where the pin sits and small sections of the inlays are now missing. Pale green patination covers the surface.

The penannular brooch was a simple and effective way to secure garments. They also served the vital purpose of securing one’s clothes in place. Thus, the popularity of this design spanned across a large period of time. They were worn by men, usually at the shoulder and on the breast of women with the pin pointing upwards. This particular brooch has Celtic influences with in the design. It was common for cultures to cross over, especially with trades and travellers entering different civilisations. The Celtic styles also featured across enamelled plate brooches and dragonesque brooches.
