Fibulae or brooches were originally used in Ancient Greece and in the Roman Empire for fastening garments, such as cloaks or togae. The fibula designs developed into a variety of shapes, but all were based on the safety-pin principle. The Nauheim type is European based with several found in Britain; it provided the foundation for the rise in the La Tène III type. Typical features of Nauheim are the bilateral spring, usually consisting of four coils but in some instances two, the narrow bow and an almost always tapering foot. The catch plate is also normally a third of the brooch in length and features a trapezoid, some rare cases the foot is a triangular shape much like this fine example.
Romano-British Bronze Nauheim type

A fine Romano-British Nauheim fibula cast in bronze featuring a narrow, rectangular highly arched bow which tapers to a slight point at the foot. The arch is embellished with engraved dots in a single row with incised lines running in different directions along the foot. The spring is a continuation of the arch displaying four coils leading to the pin which sits in the triangular catch plate, now fixed in position.

Condition: Excellent condition, green patina covers the surface.
