Dress pins such as these examples had an extremely versatile range of uses during the Anglo-Saxon period. They were worn by all classes of people whether it be to fasten clothes for both men and women, or to aid in the making, sewing and mending of clothes. The material of which the pins were made from was a way for the wearer to display their status and wealth, as gold was the most popular, however, silver was also a very desirable material. Bronze and copper were more affordable for those who were not royal or of noble class and therefore mainly owned by people of lower status.
