Jewellery during the Medieval period was predominantly used to demonstrate hierarchy and wealth. Gold was the most desired metal however silver and bronze were also popular. Bronze and copper were more affordable for those who were not royal or of noble class and therefore mainly owned by people of a lower status. Jewellery was also used for practical purposes rather than just for display. For example, brooches and buckles were used to fasten cloaks/clothes. Pins, such as this example, were used to hold head-dresses or to keep hairstyles in place.
