Clothing hooks and fasteners were a popular decorative accessory during the Medieval and Tudor period. The function of the fasteners were to hold together garments, to drape up skirts or to simply be used for decorative purposes. Hooks would prevent skirts from getting dirty when outside or were used to display rich fabrics from underneath. These beautiful accessories were also used to fasten collars and gowns without disrupting the patterns featured on the clothing.
Selection of Tudor Silver-Gilt Clothes Fasteners

A selection of Tudor period silver-gilt clothes fasteners, the pieces display a mixture of shapes including, rectangular and triangular. All with intricate and individual detailing. They all feature a sharp hooked pin on the reverse which would have been used to attach the fastenings. The loop piece would have been used to secure the piece to the clothing and the hook used to hoist up excess material or re-arrange fabric.

Condition: Good. Signs of waer due to age. Item C is missing the attachment loop and the hook is chipped.
