A small Medieval gold strap end featuring an elongated shape with curved edges creating a tongue finial. The hollow formed piece has a central raised ridge and displays two rivets used to secure to a leather strap. The reverse is plain and smooth.

Date: Circa 15th- 16th century AD
Provenance: From a late Japanese specialist collector, 1970-2000s.
Condition: Very fine condition, few minor scratches to the surface consistent with age. Small pinprick to the end on the ridge.

Strap ends were a common accessory during the Medieval period. At a time of low literacy rates, the repeated motifs and messaging imparted by certain styles would have provided a means of expression for the owner. This was connected to social identity, wealth, and status. These strap ends would be attached to leather or cloth straps to stop them from fraying. The designs originally started as quite basic and progressed to elaborate and intricate ones with Viking influences by the Late Medieval period.
