Many grand civilizations inhabited the area of Western Asia in Antiquity, and their wealth and prosperity are witnessed by the very sophisticated precious metal crafting of jewellery. Gold would have been hammered down to a thin layer and manipulated into different shapes. Gold, electrum and silver jewellery would have featured gold granules, glass and semi-precious stone inlays and detailed engravings. Fine granulation along with filigree, were at the centre of Near Eastern and Western Asiatic jewellery production and were later adopted by the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans.
Near Eastern Applique with Black Glass Beads

A finely rendered Near Eastern-Western Asiatic gold disc applique, composed of a central orange glass paste bead, framed by a halo of gold granules and black glass beads, each attached to the central medallion by a gold wire. A further cylindrical bead, carved from green hardstone tops the disc. An extremely fine example of Near Eastern jewellery art, such a piece would have been originally part of a necklace or sewed to garments.
Condition: Fine. Suitable for modern wear with care.
