Ancient Roman Black Glass Beaded Necklace with Gold Pendant

A finely restrung Ancient Roman necklace composed of small glass circular beads of different hues of black. The beads alternate between a cluster of small beads and a larger bead. At the centre sits a gold, circular, domed pendant. The front of the pendant is covered with a sheet of gold which has been enriched with incised circles and lines while the reverse is black. Two horizontal holes run through the pendant from which the necklace has been attached through one. Each bead is unique in texture and shapes which create a mosaic-like impression. The necklace testify to the popularity of glass ornaments across the Roman Empire. The necklace is finished with a modern gold-plated clasp (please be aware the clasp has not been professionally tied).

Date: Circa 1st - 3rd Century AD
Condition: Fine condition, the necklace has been restrung. Some chips and cracks to the gold sheet. Half length 23cm

The ancient Romans considered jewellery to be an essential accessory, for it provided a public display of their wealth. Roman jewellery at first followed the trends of Etruscans, adopting gold and glass beads. However, their jewellery designs became more elaborate as the power and spread of the Roman Empire increased. Different cultural styles from Greece, Egypt, North Africa, and the Orient were all incorporated to reflect Rome’s prosperity as a dominant, conquering city.
