Egyptian Turquoise Faience Necklace with Poppy Seed Amulet

A beautiful re-strung Egyptian faience necklace featuring turquoise cylindrical beads alternating with smaller, flattened circular beads of different shades of blue. The necklace is further enriched with a central turquoise amulet in the shape of a poppy seed with an unadorned back and a suspension loop at the top and bottom.

Date: Circa 1069-744 BC
Period: Third Intermediate Period
Condition: Fine condition. The necklace has been finished with a small gold clasp (please be aware that the clasp has not been professionally tied). Dimensions provided are for the full length of the necklace.

Faience is the oldest glazed ceramic in existence, created over 6000 years ago. It is produced from quartz or sand crystals mixed with other compounds and can be cast into moulds to create beads or amulets such as this fine example. Favoured for producing bright colours, faience gimmers in the light and was believed by the Egyptians to represent rebirth and immortality. The colours had different symbolisms for example, blue was thought to reflect fertility and life.
