As in many ancient societies, jewellery was an important social marker used to demonstrate the wealth of the wearer. As a result of the expansion of the Roman Empire, Roman jewellery became more and more elaborate in its designs and materials used, such as precious and semi-precious gemstones. Pearls especially were highly treasured by the Romans, worn as a public display of richness and prestige. Glass was often used as a jewellery component, as it resembled precious stones.
Late Roman Restrung Glass Necklace with Gold Beads

A stunning restrung necklace of Late Roman – Early Byzantine beads. The necklace features glass beads of different shapes, sized and hues of dark blue and is centred by a pale pink and red veined agate oval stone. This central stone is sided by two domed hollow gold beads which feature a beautiful petal like decoration and have a top and bottom rim of fine granulation. Attached to these through a gold wire is a natural pearl on each side. The necklace has been modernised with a new clasp for wear.
Condition: Very fine, restrung with modern clasp.
