Ancient Greek Gold and Garnet Pendant

$372.79

A very finely modelled Ancient Greek gold pendant. The gold has been hammered into a thin sheet and features a beautiful ridged pattern running vertically along the pendant. The gold narrows at the top, creating an almost cone-like shape. Attached to the bottom of the gold is a roughly shaped yet smooth garnet bead. The suspension loop to the top of the pendant has been remodelled in Antiquity  to allow wear.

As in many ancient societies, jewellery was an important social marker used to demonstrate wealth and richness. In Ancient Greek culture jewellery was worn in everyday life but was also buried with the deceased as part of his or her funerary outfit. Jewellery might have been enriched by precious and semi-precious stones and decorative motives would have included popular myths, gods, goddesses, and heroes.
