Western Asiatic Gold and Carnelian Beaded Pendant

A fine Western Asiatic gold pendant adorned with perforated disc-shaped beads. The pendant features a thin loop upon which an electrum drop-pendant hangs below in the centre. The pendant is surrounded by three blue glass beads topped with a carnelian bead on either side. The central drop-pendant is comprised of three hollow electrum spheres stacked vertically and separated by a electrum granulated band. The pendant is attached to the main loop through a spiral, filigree terminal. The pendant features a twisted suspension loop at the top.

Date: Circa 1st Millennium BC
Condition: Fine condition. Some irregularities in the shape of the loop due to age.

Many grand civilizations inhabited the area of Western Asia in Antiquity, and their wealth and prosperity is witnessed by the very sophisticated precious metal crafting of jewellery. Gold would have been hammered down to a thin layer and manipulated into different shapes. Gold, electrum and silver jewellery would have featured gold granules, glass and semi-precious stone inlays and detailed engravings. Fine granulation, as we can see on this item, along with filigree, were at the centre of Near Eastern and Western Asiatic jewellery production and were later adopted by the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans.
