Western Asiatic Gold Pendant with Agate Bead

£ 200.00

A Western Asiatic gold pendant with an oblong agate drop. The agate is banded with cream and dark brown tones. The semi-precious stone has been perforated at its base, suggesting that it perhaps featured a stopper bead to further secure the agate in place. A gold sheet pellet sits above the agate and is attached to a gold, hollow, spherical shape. An applied loop has been attached to the top for suspension, allowing for this pendant to be hung on a chain.

Date: Circa 1st Millenium BC
Provenance: From collection of a now deceased Japanese collector, accumulated between 1970-2015.
Condition: Fine condition, a prominent dent to the spherical component as well as minor scratches and tears to the wider gold sheet sleeve. Slight bend to the suspension loop consistent with age.

Many grand civilisations inhabited the area of Western Asia in Antiquity, and their wealth and prosperity is witnessed by the very sophisticated precious metal crafting of jewellery. Gold would have been hammered down to a thin layer and manipulated into different shapes. Gold, electrum and silver jewellery would have featured gold granules, glass and semi-precious stone inlays and detailed engravings. Fine granulation along with filigree were decorative techniques at the centre of Near Eastern and Western Asiatic jewellery production and were later adopted by the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans.
