An Ancient Roman bronze ring, featuring a D-shaped loop, expanding shoulders and an incised bezel. The bezel features and engraved depiction, possibly a Roman deity, but due to time it has now faded and details cannot be interpreted. The surface is now covered in patination due to time. UK ring size E.

Date: Circa 2nd-4th Century AD
Condition: Fine, some earthly encrustations remain on the surface. Suitable for modern wear with care.

The ancient Romans enjoyed wearing jewellery, especially rings, as a way to demonstrate their wealth and social status in the Roman society. Rings could have been modelled in gold, silver or bronze, and enriched by precious and semi-precious stones, or even glass. Some rings would have included an incised bezel, which might have been used to authenticate or sign documents. Intaglios included decorative motives driven from mythology, literature or from the personal life of the owner. Bronze rings, such as this nice example, were modelled to imitate more expensive gold examples,
