Roman Bronze Signet Ring with Goddess

$82.14

An Ancient Roman cast bronze signet ring, composed of a round, thick hoop, and a large round bezel. The bezel is engraved with the crude depiction of a figure, portrayed standing. Although it is difficult to discern the exact identity of the figure, the figure might be associated with Ceres, the roman goddess of agriculture, who was usually depicted on intaglios standing, while holding a sceptre in one hand and a wheat sheaf in the other; but also with Diana, the Roman goddess of hunting, usually portrayed holding her main attribute, a bow. A dark green patina covers the majority of the ring. UK ring size O.

Date: Circa 1st-3rd Century AD
Condition: Fine, suitable for modern wear with care.

The ancient Romans enjoyed wearing jewellery, especially rings, as a way to demonstrate their wealth and social status in the Roman society. Rings could have been modelled in gold, silver or bronze, and enriched by precious and semi-precious stones, or even glass. Some rings would have included an incised bezel, which might have been used to authenticate or sign documents. Intaglios included decorative motives driven from mythology, literature or from the personal life of the owner.
