An Egyptian Steatite Scarab Amulet to Thutmose III

£ 900.00

A glazed steatite Egyptian scarab beetle amulet with incised features to the obverse, forming the clypeus, prothorax and elytra. The reverse features incised hieroglyphs in two registers. The larger of the two includes a small cartouche with the throne name of Thutmose III. Within its circular boundary are three small and familiar signs; the ‘re’ sun disc, the ‘men’ draughtboard, and the ‘kheper’ scarab beetle sign. They form the name Men-Kheper-Re. Alongside this cartouche are four other signs. A large ‘men’ draughtboard’, a ‘n’ water ripple and an ‘i’ feather. Together these three signs form the name of the god Amun. The fourth sign is described as a hoe and translates as beloved. Thus the register reads in its entirety ‘Men-kheper-re, beloved of Amun’. The top registers depicts a reclining sphinx holding an ankh. Above him are a set of stylised hieroglyphs but could depict the epithet ‘Neb tawy’, ‘Lord of the two lands’.

Thutmose III meaning “Thoth is born” was a New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, pharaoh from 1479-1425 BC, ascending the throne at 2 years old, he was co-regent with his aunt, Hatsheput, for the first 22 years of his reign. Following many successful military campaigns, Thutmose III expanded the Egyptian empire to its largest extent, conquering land in Syria and Nubia. Thutmose III’s reign also saw some significant developments in the arts including new forms in monument and sculpture.
Not all scarabs bearing a royal name are contemporaneous to the ruling pharaoh. Some kings were held in particularly high regard, and thus their name appears on scarabs hundreds of years after their reign. Thutmose III was particularly honoured in this way, with his praenomen, Men-Kheper-Re, used on scarabs for a period of circa 1000 years.
