Selection of Viking Sun Disc Attachments

A fine Viking-Latvian selection of sun disc-shaped gold appliques, each modelled with the repousse technique. The appliques have been pierced for attachment. This type of appliques were used in antiquity to decorate and embellish dresses, robes and garments.

Both Viking men and women enjoyed wearing jewellery as an indicator of wealth and social status, wearing these pieces kept their wealth safe and secure. Appliques of this type, were used in Viking society to decorate dresses and garments, and were modelled using different techniques. These specific appliques have been created by hammering the gold sheet from the reverse side, allowing the creation of beautiful motifs. Such technique is known as repousse.
