Hangers were an item predominately worn by women. They were functional but also decorative which in turn would be a display of one’s wealth. Hangers were used to suspend various items. It would be attached to a belt or brooch and may have held small tools such as scissors or keys. Alternatively, the hanger may be used as a decorative item and therefore would hold beads, amulets, bells etc
Viking Bronze Hanger

A Viking bronze hanger in the shape of an upside-down anchor. The piece is enriched with a bearded male face in low relief at the centre. Each of the arms display a beast facing downwards along with swirling motifs. There are three piercings, one in each of the arms on the beast’s face and one at the bottom. The reverse is flat and unadorned.
Provenance: From the private collection of a London gentleman, from his grandfather's collection formed before the early 1970s.
Condition: Fine condition, patination to the surface, some wear to the right arm and the base consistent with age.
