The small, hand-held, wick-burning oil lamp was the main source of light for the ancient world, being not only the most efficient but also the most economical.  This grey-ware style, and shape of lamp was common in the Eastern Mediterranean of the Hellenistic Period, with the linear striations adding a decorative finish not found in earlier forms.
