The kanthoros was a distinctive cup, used for wine. It was used both for drinking from and for ceremonial purposes. The shape is often depicted on black-figure and red-figure pottery in association with Dionysus and Herakles.
Etruscan Bucchero Kantharos with Animal Frieze

A large Etruscan kantharos made from bucchero blackware featuring large, looped handles and a long narrow stemmed foot. The cylindrical body is decorated with a narrow frieze of animals, walking in procession.
Provenance: Anonymous sale; Bonhams, London, 14 May 2003, lot 486 (part lot). Gottfried and Helga Hertel collection, Cologne, acquired at the above sale.
Condition: Very fine. Professionally repaired.
