This type of bowl was produced in the African province of the Roman Empire, and belongs to the “African Red Slipware” category, a type of terra sigillata, from the Latin, meaning ‘sealed earth’. These potteries, which can take various forms, are characterized by an orange colour and a shiny surface. Most African Red Slipware workshops are known from modern Tunisia and Algeria, and they were active from the 1st century until the 7th century AD. By the third century AD the African red slip ware had become the most popular type of tableware in the Roman Empire.
