The Wan Nian jar type denotes a plain storage jar, usually without lugs or decorative additions. Sometimes referred to as Wannian, the term literally translates as ‘myriad year’, as the jars were used in burial practices, and thus signifies many years of life. Tang Dynasty pottery production is renowned for its finely modelled and brightly coloured tomb figurines. However, Tang Dynasty artisans also excelled in the production of functional, single coloured ceramics used in in everyday life and for export.
