Tang Dynasty Straw-Glazed Pot

A straw-glazed earthenware pot from the Tang Dynasty. The pot has a pyriform shape and high shoulders, which lead to a short neck and rolled rim. The upper section of the vase has been decorated with a straw-coloured glaze, as is characteristic of the period.

Condition: Fine condition; loss of surface glaze; some minor abrasions; one small chip to the foot.

This shape, with its high shoulders and short neck, was a favourite for funerary vessels. Its white-glazed pyriform shape was perfected and widely used, with the vessel known as a ‘wan nian’ jar (“myriad year jar”)
