As portrayed in the name, casket keys were used to lock funerary caskets once the deceased had been placed inside. This was to prevent the casket from opening during burial and to protect the body from the natural elements when buried. A close family member would usually lock the casket and the key was then gifted to them as a memento or keep-sake to commemorate the occasion.
