Late Medieval Bronze Padlock

£ 30.00

A late Medieval barrel lock which has been published in ‘Detector Finds 3’ by Gordon Bailey. The lock consists of a cylindrical barrel with a bar above and the other acting as a bolt. This type of locks usually requires barb-springs which would catch internally behind a stop within the barrel. When a key was inserted it would compress the internal barb-springs to allow the bolt to be withdrawn. Unfortunately, this piece is no longer in working condition.

Date: Circa 15th-17th century AD

Much like today, padlocks were used for the safe keeping of houses and precious items. The Vikings were the first to properly utilise and become skilled in creating padlocks. They would install multiple locks on doors and chests with it being recorded that some treasures and armours were secured by up to a dozen padlocks.
