In Ancient Roman society and everyday life, small bells such as this one served many different purposes. They would often have been intended for practical uses such as signalling time, announcements or to keep track of livestock. Bells were also used in some ritual practices, or were hung from tintinnabula, a sort of wind-chime assemblage, designed to ward off evil.

An Ancient Roman cast bronze bell with a circular, ribbed loop for suspension. The bell features a cylindrical shape, with two rows of small windows, and a hemispherical roof, decorate with incised lines. On the inside are visible the remains of the rail that supported the clapper. A well-preserved example of a Roman everyday artefact.
Condition: Extremely fine with nice dark brown patina. The bell has been mounted on a custom-made stand ideal for display.
