Roman Bronze Mirror

A Roman bronze box mirror, composed of two disks hinged together, which would of have initially been plated on the interior to create a reflective surface. The exterior of one side is decorated with concentric bands, centred around an appliqué of a lion head. A large arching handle loops on the ends through a catch plate. The reverse remains undecorated.

 

Date: Circa 2nd century AD
Condition: Excellent, with nice green and brown patina to the surface.

Delicate mirror cases such as these were favoured by the wealthier Roman citizens. They were often decorated with scenes from mythology or those fitting for a toilet article. This particular piece is compact and entirely suitable for a woman of the time.
