The crescent axe head of epsilon shape enjoyed a wide distribution in the Near East, where it first appeared in Mesopotamia during the third millennium BC. Typologically, axe heads of this form are direct derivatives from the flat epsilon axe heads. The introduction of a shaft-hole cast in one with the blade greatly increased its strength and efficiency.
