Luristan Bronze Dagger

A Luristan bronze dagger featuring a flat, leaf-shaped blade. The blade has slightly rounded shoulders with curved terminals; its surface is smooth with no visible midrib. A square-sectioned handle with a slightly flared end extends from the blade. The surface is covered with blue-green patination and some earthly encrustations. The handle of the dagger was likely to have originally been wrapped in leather or inserted into a wooden grip which is no longer attached.

Date: Circa 1800-600 BC
Provenance: Ex. collection of a London gentleman, 1990s.
Condition: Fine condition. Minor chipping to the edges of the blade consistent with age. The piece is covered with patination and earthly encrustations. The blade is supplied with custom-made stand.

Luristan bronze comes from the province of Lorestan, a region situated in the south-western area of the Zagros Mountains. The region developed sophisticated and prolific metal-working technology from the 3rd millennium BC, with manufacture not suffering decline until the 7th century BC. Over this extensive period, metalworkers were essential for supplying and arming both local wealthy patrons and the warring factions. Their artwork mainly comprises of ornaments, vessels and weapons.
