A herm is a sculpture with a head (and sometimes torso) above a plain, usually squared, lower section, with carved male genitals at the appropriate height.
The figures performed an apotropaic function, being considered to ward off harm or evil.

An interesting Ancient Roman bronze hasp in the form of a youthful herm figure, with stylised male genitalia adorning the midsection. The back displays a hinged loop at the base, which reveals its function.
Provided with custom-made stand.
Condition: Fine condition; complete and intact. The figure has an attractive dark olive-green patination throughout.
