The symbol of the dragon was ubiquitous in Viking culture, but perhaps most conspicuous as the heads adorning the bow and stern of ornate longships. Here they served as an indicator of power and bravery, with the intention of intimidating the enemy. This dragonhead would likely have been found in a domestic context, but this is not unusual: ornamental dragonhead dress pins, for instance, are known from the major centres of the Viking world.
