Known as Landscape Marble, these slabs of stone are a variety of stromatolitic limestone. Stromatolites, such as this example, are colonies of fossilized algae and bacteria that have created layers of sediment. In Landscape stones, these layers create patterns that look like the natural world, including land, sky, trees, and clouds. This stone originates from the Penarth group, from South Wales and Southwest England, and dates to the Triassic period.
